About

The Past

The Past

The company was established in 1880 in Leeds where it started life as a business designing and making furniture, in 1913 it became a limited company and developed into the business of importing and machining timber under the name of Hurst & Woodhead Ltd. Around 30 years ago the company began its first tentative steps into the manufacture of simple garden buildings under the new name of 'Woodlands'. The rapid growth of the company at its original offices soon developed to house a large, modern DIY superstore as well as manufacturing units for garden sheds and a timber machining plant.

Sign of the times

One of the most visual examples of how the company has moved forward over the years is the changing face of the retail DIY and timber merchant site. Have a look at the thumbnails below for a closer look at how we’ve gone from an old fashioned wood-yard to a state of the art DIY superstore at our flagship Horsforth base, with a few different incarnations in between.

The Present

The Present

Woodlands is now one of the premier garden building manufacturers in the North of England and has a chain of sales agents throughout the UK. Our success is built around the quality and diversity of our products and the professional service we are able to offer all of our customers. Since 2005 we have operated from two large sites in Leeds with our newly purpose built manufacturing and timber machining plant in Rodley now complementing our ever expanding and re-developed DIY superstore which still runs from the original Horsforth site. With a dedicated team of over 75 employees we are a strong and resilient company with an esteemed history that is proud of the quality reputation we have built in the past but also mindful enough to focus our attention on planning and developing our business for the future.

The Future

The Future

There’s no room for companies that stand still in the business world and with our consistent investment in bigger and better machinery and regular forays into newly developing sales channels we are always aiming to maintain steady growth as a company. Recent developments have seen us move sites to a new manufacturing plant and commit to a dedicated log cabin manufacturing department. Both of these areas will be significantly developed in the upcoming years to allow us to grow and compete at the forefront of the garden shed and log cabin industries. We continue to invest time and money in supporting our agents across the country with innovative sales techniques such as the use of the internet and other technologies to help promote our products in the best possible ways to the end customer.
